BFA in Screenwriting - How to Apply
BFA in Screenwriting
Admission to the Film - Screenwriting program (BFA) at York University is based on both academic and artistic criteria. The University reviews your academic history, while artistic admissibility is assessed by the Department of Film.
We are looking for committed writers excited by the possibilities of collaborative moving image storytelling.
Application to the Film Screenwriting program is a two-step process:
1. Apply to York University
Submit your application to the York University: Fine Arts - Film Screenwriting (BFA) program on the Ontario Universities Application Centre (OUAC) website. If you are not a current high school student, you may also be eligible to apply directly through the York University Office of Admissions. Current York students interested in transfering to the program should contact the department directly to apply.
2. Complete the Supplementary Evaluation
Once you have completed Step 1 (above) and received your York Reference Number from our Office of Admissions, you can access your supplementary evaluation.
Supplementary Evaluation fee: $60 CDN (payable by Visa, Master Card or American Express)
The supplementary evaluation for our Screenwriting program consists of:
a. Portfolio, which consists of 8-10 pages (double-spaced) of up to three of your strongest creative writing (prose, poetry, playwriting, screenwriting) pieces.
You will be able to submit your portfolio online as part of your supplementary evaluation.
b. A short essay about your interest in studying screenwriting at the University level
c. Two recommendations. You will be asked to provide us with the contact information for your two recommenders. We will contact them to complete the online recommendation form and upload a recommendation letter. Please notify you recommenders prior to submitting their contact information to us.
d. Interview (for short-listed applicants). Your supplementary evaluation materials (a-c), along with your most recent available grades, will be reviewed by faculty in the Department of Film.
Based on the results of this review, short-listed applicants will be invited for an on-campus interview on Saturday, March 8. This day will also include film screenings, a tour of our facilities, and other opportunities to get to know our program. Please keep this day free!
We strongly encourage all our applicants to attend the on-campus day as it offers you the most extensive and engaged experience. However if you live more than 400km away from York University, or have other extenuating circumstances that preclude you from coming to campus, you may arrange a distance evaluation.
Note: If you are also applying to the BFA in Production, you must complete a second online application for that program.
